“You are not that good” – Ruben Amorim reveals what went wrong with ‘naive’ Man Utd star

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim admitted Alejandro Garnacho didn’t enjoy his best match against Nottingham Forest, but still picked up some positive aspects from his display.

The Red Devils returned defeated from their trip to Nottingham, as Anthony Elanga punished his old employers with a shocking 85-meter solo run before slotting his shot past Andre Onana.

The winger’s fifth-minute strike teased an entertaining affair, but it proved to be the solitary goal of the contest, as Forest were happy to absorb Man Utd’s pressure for the rest of the contest, while Amorim’s men couldn’t produce much in the final third.

Although he remained on the pitch for the duration of the contest, Garnacho struggled to make his presence felt. The Argentinian youngster looked dejected at the final whistle, perhaps realising he should have done more.

After the contest, Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst blasted Garnacho’s ‘naive’ display, especially after kicking the ball away, which earned him a free yellow card. Hence, Luckhurst gave the winger a 4/10 grade, the lowest on the night.

For his part, Amorim admitted Garnacho had many things wrong in the final third, but still defended him for trying his best and tracking back to support his teammates in the defensive phase.

“He is making everything. He’s trying. Sometimes you have one day that you are doing the right things, but in the final third, you are not that good, can happen,” said the 40-year-old in his post-match interview.

“The most important thing for me is that when he needs to run back, he is running back,” concluded the manager.

Garnacho was a favourite at Erik ten Hag’s court over the past two campaigns, but he hasn’t always delivered the goods under Amorim. The Portuguese tactician had dropped him to the bench earlier the campaign, but Amad Diallo’s injury helped him regain a starting spot.

The 20-year-old has been constantly linked with a summer exit, as Napoli are reportedly keen to sign him.

  1. Here we go again Amorim throws his players under the bus, what about the defenders allowing an ex MU starlet to run almost 80yds and score, obviously the bus doesn’t have enough wheels to run over the defence,Amorim is very particular on whe he wants to denegrate,he should be looking for a new job soon hopefully and take his mate Fernandes with him.

    1. How did he throw his players under the bus? What happened to the last coach that didn’t throw them under the boss? How did they repay him?
If he praises the players y’all will say he’s deluded, he was clearly stating what we could all see except for those who choose to hide from the truth.
These players are men and some fathers already earning huge amount of money yet they can’t be criticized opening, note, people on that club are losing their jobs almost on a daily because of their terrible performances onfield.
I’m all for the throwing of any player under the bus provided it’s fair and just….who loses his job when it all goes wrong? The manager, so let him handle matters his way and as he seems fit, he’s the one with these players daily and he knows their attributes.
Garnacho needs to know his decision making needs huge work but he also knows he has no issues with his work rate.
No more babysitting of these players please.

    2. he hasnt thrown him under the bus. In fact he has praised him. what are you on about? did you read it?
Maybe you should be looking for a new hobby

    3. No sure you know what you are wishing for, Fernandes is not perfect but he is the fulcrum of much of what United do on the pitch. Amorim? Second Division material.

    4. Agree , he is been doing this since he came to Man U.He is a terrible coach, no idea’s,Absolutely no people skils. That is why even his players at Lisbon don’t w3ant to come. weonder why Rasford was so depressed and Carnacio wants to get out for sure, and Mainoo is next. Armorim was a huge mistake

  2. Garnacho has proven that he can play, and excel, at this level. He’s still a young player (20 I think) and yesterday certainly wasn’t his best. All players have off days and Garnacho had one yesterday. However, he’s the furthest thing from United’s problem. Manchester United is currently fielding a squad that simply stated, isn’t good enough to beat a top 3 squad. Say what you want, NF is such a squad and while statistically United did enough to get a better result, the overall lack of quality to win consistently in the League was most evident. Currently fielding only a few top rated, experienced world-class, players (Bruno…well…maybe he’s the only one?)…Amorim has some young, inexperienced players gaining valuable experience that should help down the road. Without Amad’s piece of the attack, and with Garnacho’s off-day, (let me add that Bruno also had a rare off-day where he wasn’t sharp) United simply had no current, legitimate threat in the attacking third. Was there anyone yesterday who you felt was going to score? I’ll save you the time. The answer is ‘no’. United needs to get healthy again…
    Luke Shaw
    Lisandro Martinez
    Amad
    Kobbie Mainoo
    Ayden Heaven
….and they need to add a few quality players in the off-season…a proven goal scorer is a must!
My own opinion is this isn’t going to be a ‘quick’ fix. I like some of our young talent a lot but the overall squad needs an overhaul and it could be a few seasons until United is back and competing at the very top. It’s United though…so they WILL be back. Until then, may we continue cheering them on!

    1. Shaw and Martinez need replacing for more resilient up grades. Not convinced by Dorgu, de Ligt, Mazraoui, Ugarte, Dalot or Hojland and Zirkzee. Nothing there that even Brighton would look at. Perhaps could do better with a new system but that will not happen under Amorim.

  3. Garnacho did not have a great game. His vision in the final third was less than you would expect from Anthony. Like Anthony he just ran in from the wings and tried to shoot, most shots never got passed the first defender. He did not see the other team members making runs around him and would pass when he got in trouble.

Overall he needs to work on his vision on the pitch and things will improve for him and the team.

  4. It is with less frequency that you hear Amorim admitting his mistakes, because he compounds one by making another, he can change a player but a system and that is what makes the difference. There is a lack of quality from manager to players.

  5. Too much negativity here: third-placed Forest were hanging on last night and mighty relieved to escape with the win. With luck on our side, we’d have had one point at least, and possibly all three.
Wait until we get a functioning attack; things will look very different.
Tell you one thing: we’ll be Champions again before Arsenal.

  6. The team needs a complete rebuild, possibly around Bruno (the best player we have). At the moment there are too many ineffective players. However, Bruno is 30, so not going to be at his best much longer. Real Madrid have apparently offered £90m for Bruno. So we should sell him and use the money for the rebuild. Maybe then Kobbie Mainoo doesn’t need to be sold, as he may fill Bruno’s role eventually. Buying the right players has been our problem over recent years though.
