To make his uphill battle considerably more difficult over the last few months, Ruben Amorim has been navigating an injury-ridden Manchester United squad.
Indeed, to say the head coach has his work cut out at Old Trafford is an understatement, and, as such, it’s why so many fans have essentially given him a free pass until the end of the season when he will – hopefully – be backed by INEOS in the market.
With regards to the absences he’s having to work around, Amorim is without star attacker Amad Diallo and stalwart centre-half Lisandro Martinez for the rest of the term.
You’d be forgiven for forgetting Mason Mount is actually a United player, given how unfortunate he’s been with his fitness since his £50 million move from Chelsea. He remains sidelined, as does Luke Shaw, who’s now gone an entire 12 months without making a start for the club.
Kobbie Mainoo, Altay Bayindir and Jonny Evans are all unavailable until further notice, while Harry Maguire was spotted limping before being withdrawn during last Sunday’s FA Cup defeat to Fulham, so it remains to be seen the severity of his setback.
Amorim boosted by Toby Collyer return in midfield

One boost for Amorim, however, is that Toby Collyer has returned to training this morning ahead of Thursday’s last-16 Europa League tie away to Real Sociedad. He is poised to claim a starting spot over the likes of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen, both of whom have enjoyed increased game time in the 21-year-old’s absence.

Bruno Fernandes heaped praise on the Carrington graduate following the Reds’ 2-1 win over Rangers in January, telling reporters post-match: “Toby doesn’t need help if I’m being honest. He is a great kid and a great example of a professional. He comes from the academy and knows his place, knows how much he wants to get into the positions of other players. He trains very well every week and trains at the maximum level every time.
“He’s a really good kid who wants to learn. He’s eager to listen and has big, big qualities. He’s aggressive off and on the ball, he’s class in tight spaces, and he’s just going to get better.”
Will he play from the start? Big question, so many players have suffered arrested development this season under both managers. These are Academy players which does not promise much for those waiting to come through when they see what is happening at first team level. Their confidence is being sucked out of them by poor management.
Correct, players taking a lot lomger time on injury because they don’t want to play for this coach. Why would they. mFirst he says they are terrible, worst team ever and thenhe tells them that he doesn’t want almosy everybody so why would youwant to come back. worst coach ever. Even TH didn’t try to shame his players
My problem with Amorin is that he’s not giving the academy boys an opportunity to showcase the stuff they’re made of.
He keeps playing those that are not performing. If he had been playing them before, by now we wouldn’t have been missing those on the treatment table.
I think your right, the boys are the future of Manchester..
