Manchester United icon Paul Scholes offers his take on Ruben Amorim’s current situation at the club which he describes as a mess.
The 50-year-old made an appearance on The Overlap Fan Debate hosted by Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher. The fans got the opportunity to chat with the legendary midfielder, and the managerial topic inevitably popped up.
Scholes was asked if he thinks Amorim should be sacked at the end of the season if he fails to guide the club towards Europe which would cost the Reds dearly from a financial standpoint (which appears to be the most likely scenario at this stage). Nevertheless, the former England international notes that the Portuguese tactician isn’t entirely to blame since he had walked into a club that was already in utter chaos.
“Look, I’m not at the point where I’m thinking it’s the wrong decision [to appoint Amorim],” said the 1999 treble winner. “Because he’s coming into a mess and still feels like a mess.”
That being said, Scholes revealed he’s not quite impressed with the club’s current status under Amorim, especially the dire league status.
“But the rest, with the league, not so much. The league form, the way they’re playing now, even in the cup competitions.”
Paul Scholes explains why Ruben Amorim shouldn’t be sacked

United currently lie in a miserable 13th place in the Premier League table, as their results arguably regressed since Amorim took over from Erik ten Hag. Hence, the Red Devils are pretty much out of the running for European spots.
Therefore, they’ll be looking to rescue their campaign by going far in the cup competitions, especially the Europa League, since winning the tournament remains their solitary plausible track towards the Champions League next season. The Reds finished the group stage in the Top 8, thus booking a direct place in the Round of 16.
I really don’t think Amorim made any more friends by playing Dorgu on the right, after so much being said of wanting a left sided player to balance the team. He has really confused fans and pundits along with players, with his decisions. Kobie Mainoo is another player who has played 10 times for England in a central midfield role and got the MOTM in many games last season playing there for United. Yet Amorim doesn’t see him as a partner for Ugarte, as most fans and pundits in Europe thought would be the case. If we are to win the Europa league, this area will need to be sorted quickly. Our forwards are being starved of service and Fernandes is wasted playing further back with Ugarte.
I like Amorim, and think he is a very good coach, but some of his decisions lately are really confusing. After nearly 4 months in a job, you would expect a manager to have his team and squad sorted by now. He has a lot of young players from the Academy and Under 21s at his disposal which are ready for the move up. Use them, is what a top manager would do. It would be a shame for Ineos to have to sack him and start from the beginning again, as the players must be brainwashed by now, with all the different systems they have tried since Fergie left.
a top manager wouldn’t play the kids, united fans are pretty ignorant when it comes to this. whilst ferguson kind of did this, the likes of giggs for instance, other players were bedded in slower and guardiola didn’t do this for city, nor did klopp for instance. v few clubs do this as most kids from the academy are either not ready or frankly not good enough.
also in amorims system the wingbacks are inverted, meaning that it isnt so surprising that dorgu played on the right, quenda i belive is the same – dalot is terrible on the left there is no doubt about that.
kobbie mainoo is not a midfielder, he is far too slow and lacks many attributes to play there. his best position is in the 10, but even then we need better.
Fact is uniteds squad is really poor after ETH and will need a few years just to correct the wastage. not sure if amorim will get that time, the results have to pick up or he won’t be here next season imo.
I would start why Coach giving Marcus Rashford away to another club when he showedin30 minutes of play that he is fully fit andMainoo should be playing with Ugarte even with the system he wishes to play those should be playing there and Maguire at the back thanks
Please man united need to sack amorim immedently do to his formation and selecting players out of position because i never saw a new couch lost his first match or draw insist of win 3 point Only ruben at man u, so man united should sack him now and bring ole guner back and pogba please?
I think he should have persevered with the current playing style and get in a good position in the league and cups then at the end of the season sign the best players for his system which he can then sort out on the tour forb next season not thrust them into a new style this season when he hasn’t got the players to carry it out
