Garnacho – The state of play: Amorim’s comments, Chelsea’s interest and Napoli’s bid

With only four days remaining of the winter transfer window, Alejandro Garnacho’s future remains hanging in the balance at Manchester United.

The forward has been one of the hottest topics of January following early interest from Napoli. Then, when it was revealed that he was no longer considered off-limits by United, Chelsea entered the race.

As it stands, only the Serie A leaders have made a formal approach after they saw a £40 million bid swiftly rejected over a fortnight ago due to it not meeting the Reds’ valuation. By facilitating Garnacho’s exit, United would recuperate straight profit to aid their Profit and Sustainability situation – therefore giving themselves a valuable boost for future transfer windows. In regards to Ruben Amorim’s stance over potentially losing one of his most prolific forwards, he told TNT Sports ahead of Thursday’s trip to Bucharest: “I’m happy to have Garnacho here. He’s improving a lot. He’s a young, talented guy.

“You want to work with these guys with talent. That’s what drives the coaches to improve the team: to have these kind of players that you know they are going to improve a lot. In football, especially when we are in these situations, sometimes it’s hard, but I don’t want to focus on that. I’m really happy to have Garnacho playing tomorrow.”

United braced for late Garnacho approach

Reports as recent as today have claimed Chelsea could submit a proposal before Monday’s deadline. However, it’s thought that his valuation has now hiked up to £80m, presumably because the Carrington graduate would 1: be going to a direct rival and 2: leaving so late that finding a suitable replacement would be incredibly difficult.

That’s not to say INEOS chiefs haven’t been scouring the market, though. United are among a host of Premier League sides monitoring Bayern Munich wantaway Mathys Tel, who favours United over the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea. Yet, Bayern’s desire to sanction a permanent deal has led to Spurs pipping their noses in front, as they are willing to pay around £51m to seal the 19-year-old’s signature in the coming days.

Marcus Rashford remains exiled from Amorim’s squad, having failed to complete his desired switch in recent weeks. His most concrete suitor is Barcelona, although their precarious financial woes mean sales are imperative to free up space on the wage bill – only after that could they fully pursue the England international.
