Manchester United are reportedly keeping close tabs on their former player Alvaro Carreras, identifying him as a fallback option.

The Red Devils have pinpointed Lecce youngster Patrick Dorgu as their main target to bolster their left flank before the end of the January transfer session. The Premier League giants have reportedly agreed terms with the player’s entourage, but they still have to find an accord with the defiant Serie A minnows who are fighting to keep hold of their prized asset until the end of the season.

But while it remains to be seen if United will be successful on that front, the club has already a well-defined, as they don’t want to be caught off guard in case they were to return from Italy empty-handed.

So according to Sky Sport Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, bringing Carreras back to Carrington is the club’s alternative plan.

“Rúben Amorim is pushing hard to sign Patrick Dorgu before the end of this winter transfer window. The 20-y/o left fullback from Lecce is currently Amorim’s desired target, he has made that clear in recent days,” posted Plettenberg on X.

“If a move for Dorgu falls through, Manchester United are seriously considering activating the buy-back option to bring Álvaro Fernandez (Carreras) back from SL Benfica.”

The 21-year-old Spaniard is a youth product of Deportivo and Real Madrid who eventually made his way to Manchester in 2020. After climbing his way up the club’s ranks, he found playing time hard to come by with the first team, so he sealed a loan move to Benfica last January which was then made permanent for €6 million.

The young left-back has been in delightful form in Lisbon, earning comparisons with his compatriot Alex Grimaldo who also found great success with the Portuguese giants before joining Bayer Leverkusen. Some observers went on to consider him a ‘World Class talent’.

Luckily for the Red Devils, they wisely inserted a buy-back clause in the contract worth €20 million which they’re now considering activating.
