While changes will continue to be made across the field to suit Ruben Amorim’s desired formation and style in the coming months, you can expect that Bruno Fernandes will be a mainstay throughout.

Indeed, the skipper has held down an integral starting role under each manager he’s represented since arriving at Old Trafford in 2020, and, in truth, there are not many players you could pick out across Europe that’d do a better job than Fernandes in the middle of the park.

The Manchester United captain’s creativity, fight, and unwavering commitment to the cause have often set him aside from his counterparts. Such efforts were evidently recognised by the board, too, as when rumours surfaced over the summer linking him with a shock move away from the club, he was awarded a lucrative new deal to make him one of the highest earners in M16.

Fernandes, like most Reds, endured a slow start to the campaign in the final stages of Erik ten Hag’s reign. However, the floodgates opened when the Dutchman was relieved of his duties, as Fernandes would go on to notch four goals and two assists in Ruud van Nistelrooy’s four-game spell as interim manager.

Fernandes is an irreplaceable cog at the heart of United’s setup

Even when the goals aren’t flooding in from his teammates, the Portuguese playmaker is still there, putting opportunities on a plate for them. According to StatmanDave, he has created 139 chances since the start of 2023/2024 – 16 more than any other player in the Premier League and a whopping 83 more than any member of the United squad. Alas, it’s no surprise the analyst hailed Fernandes as the club’s ‘most important player’.

Such a sentiment was echoed by Ian Wright, too. Speaking on The Kelly and Wrighty Show, the Arsenal legend detailed his high expectations for United’s No.8 now that his countryman is in the dugout.

“Can I say something though in respect to Bruno Fernandes,” he began. “He’s going to be even better. He’s going to be unbelievable, even seeing it in flashes. He was picking up the ball, and he had options. I’m telling you, once he gets the right players, we’re going to see something.”
