Amidst a turbulent start to Manchester United’s 2024/2025 campaign by all accounts, there have been some silver linings for Ruben Amorim to build from.

Primarily, the players who’ve shone during such uncertain times at Old Trafford.

Noussair Mazraoui, for example, has transitioned seamlessly into the starting XI after falling out of favour at Bayern Munich. United were there to capitalise on his availability and snapped up the fullback for only £12.8 million, which has proven to be one of the wisest bits of business INEOS have overseen since taking the reins.

On the other hand, Andre Onana endured the opposite of a comfortable transition when he moved from Inter Milan last summer. He quickly compiled an unwanted catalogue of costly errors, prompting fans to cast doubt over whether he was the suitable successor to longstanding servant David de Gea.

He has since silenced his doubters, though, as Onana has been nothing short of a stalwart between the sticks this campaign. Not only does he boast the most clean sheets (five) of any Premier League goalkeeper in the opening 12 matches, but he has also prevented the most goals (4.1) of any of his top-flight counterparts thus far.

The Cameroonian’s showing against Ipswich Town on Sunday evening was nothing short of spectacular, too. He made five saves in total, stopping certain goals on more than one occasion to keep United in the tie before they were ultimately made to settle for a point at Portman Road.

Journalist Sam Pilger took to X/Twitter to share his glowing verdict of Onana’s display, writing: “Andre Onana has comfortably been Manchester United’s best player this season and is now one of the Premier League best keepers. He single-handedly stopped United from losing today.”
