Bruno Fernandes and former Manchester United teammate Cristiano Ronaldo got on the scoresheet as Portugal thumped Poland in Porto to qualify for the knockout stages of the UEFA Nations League.
Portugal topped Group A1 thanks to goals from Ronaldo (x2), Rafael Leao, Neto and Fernandes.
AC Milan star Leao opened the scoring for the hosts just before the hour mark.
Ronaldo doubled their lead from the penalty spot before Fernandes added a third with a superb strike from distance that crashed off the underside of the crossbar.
Bruno Fernandes amongst the goals again
The United captain now has five goals and two assists in his last five games for club and country, which means he is reaching top form.
Fernandes did not score a goal for United this season until Erik ten Hag was dismissed. He rediscovered his eye for goal when Ruud van Nistelrooy became interim manager and will hope to continue his scoring spree under new head coach Ruben Amorim.
Portugal knew that a win would be enough to secure qualification to the quarter-finals, but Scotland’s win over Croatia means that Roberto Martinez’s side will finish top spot.
The win also means that Ronaldo has the most wins in international football:
- Cristiano Ronaldo – 132
- Sergio Ramos – 131
- Iker Casillas – 121
Ronaldo topped it off with a superb bicycle kick for his 910th career goal.
