Manchester United were reportedly snubbed after showing an interest in Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso in the summer after he led to Bundesliga club to title success.

It is well known that United met with several managerial candidates during the summer when there were doubts over Erik ten Hag’s future, including newly appointed England manager Thomas Tuchel.

While those doubts remain following a rocky start to the 2024/25 season, speculation over who United have an eye on as a potential successor is never far away.

Ten Hag still has the backing of the board and it’s important to note that United’s interest in Alonso reportedly surfaced before the season started.

And, it doesn’t sound like he is interested in coming to Old Trafford.

According to the Daily Mail, Alonso snubbed interest from both United and Liverpool during the summer after deciding to stay at the BayArena to build on his success (or wait for the Real Madrid job?).

These headlines will only put a stronger spotlight on Ten Hag’s future, but hopefully, an improvement on the pitch after the international break will lead to better results. It’s the only way the Dutchman can save his job.

Former Liverpool man managing United?

The Spaniard, who starred in Liverpool’s midfield between 2004 and 2009, is regarded by many as one of the most highly coveted coaches in football.

This would suggest why United would have Alonso on their radar, as a young coach aged 42 grasping to the management side of things with great pedigree.

Sir Matt Busby played for Liverpool, yet he is the man who transformed United into the greatest club in the world. If Alonso is good enough and has his heart in the right place, I don’t see why many would object to the idea of him becoming manager, even though it doesn’t look like it will happen anytime soon.

At least being former Liverpool is better than being current Liverpool!
