Former Arsenal defender Lee Dixon has pinpointed a potential target he believes would ‘fit in’ under Mikel Arteta at the Emirates.
Angel Gomes is known to Manchester United fans after emerging through the youth ranks at Carrington. In the past year, the midfielder has enjoyed an impressive rise to prominence, establishing himself in the Lille squad and the England national team after earning his first cap under interim boss Lee Carsley.
The 24-year-old was sold by United in 2020. However, Lille initially sent him on loan to gain senior experience at Portuguese side Boavista.
Gomes has since made over 100 appearances for the French side over the past three years, with his form leading to constant speculation. He was the joint-highest assist provided in Ligue 1 last term.
It should be no surprise that United are part of the conversation, but Lee Dixon has now tipped the talented playmaker to return to England – but for Arsenal.
Speaking with plejmo.com (cited by Manchester Evening News), Dixon has urged the Gunners to sign Gomes.
“I think Angel Gomes would fit in at Arsenal superbly,” Dixon said. “His qualities are clear to see, he’s a very good link-up player and we’ve seen that he can play alongside Declan Rice.
“He’s got a lot of potential and although there will be plenty of clubs looking at club, I could see him at Arsenal next season.”
Angel Gomes out of contract in 2025
One of the key factors behind the race for Gomes is that his contract is set to expire next summer.
Arsenal and other Premier League clubs will inevitably be thrown into the mix following Gomes’ England debut.
It would be great to see a Gomes reunion at United next summer, but there has been nothing solid reported on our apparent interest in bringing him back home. Not enough to get our hopes up anyway.
United are still trying to build a successful team and it would be no harm to seek out some bargain deals when they’re available.
