David de Gea is poised to complete his return to club football over 12 months after his Manchester United exit.

This time last year, the Spaniard had just bid farewell to United fans following 12 years between the sticks at Old Trafford.

His departure was nothing short of a farce, with reports at the time claiming he’d been offered a new contract on a lower salary, which he agreed to sign before the board pulled out of the prospective deal. It has since been suggested that the manner of his release left him feeling disheartened, and you can’t blame him, really.

Nevertheless, De Gea proceeded to take some time out of the spotlight while he assessed his next options. At 33 years old, there’s certainly plenty left in the tank for a goalkeeper to continue playing at the highest level.

He found himself linked with a host of potential suitors, though none took his fancy the same way a Serie A move did. Fabrizio Romano has tonight confirmed that the former Red has a ‘medical booked’ with Fiorentina, whom he will join on an initial one-year deal plus the option of an additional season.

De Gea’s ex-United teammate and close friend, Raphael Varane, has also just completed a move to Italy; the decorated centre-half signed for newly-promoted Como, meaning the two will reunite – this time as opponents – in November 2024.

Best wishes to both of them in their new endeavours.
