‘I am very patriotic’ – Rasmus Hojlund relishing Euro 2024

Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund relishes the prospect of representing Denmark at his first major international tournament this summer.

The 21-year-old is in the provisional Denmark squad for the European Championships after narrowly missing out on a place in the squad at the 2022 World Cup.

Denmark, who reached the semi-finals of the Euros three years ago, is in Group C alongside England and hopes to go a step further this summer. Serbia and Slovenia join them in the group.

The Danes will aim to pull off another surprise after winning the tournament in 1982. Furthermore, they will be looking to make the best having qualified in back-to-back European Championships for the first time in 20 years.

Speaking to Tipsbladet, Hojlund said: “It’s going to be insanely cool. I was close to making it last time (to the World Cup in Qatar), but stumbled right at the finish line. I’m really looking forward to it – now we’ll first have to see if I get selected. It means a lot to me to play on the national team, and it always has. I have always followed the national team and been a big supporter – even when things didn’t go so well.

“I am very patriotic, and it’s something very special to take the field with other Danes and play against other nations. It will always be special to me. I have never been the type to set a goal for myself, but of course, I will be happy if we advance from the group stage, and I can help the team along the way by scoring some goals.”

Meanwhile, Christian Eriksen was among several Denmark players to pull out from the squad ahead of the qualification games in November last year but returned to the squad despite falling behind in the midfield pecking order at Old Trafford this season.
