New referee technology to be tested when Crystal Palace host Manchester United

For the first time in the Premier League, referee Jarred Gillett is set to wear a camera during tonight’s clash between Crystal Palace and Manchester United at Selhurst Park.

The footage caught by the camera will not be broadcast live, but will instead feature in a short programme promoting match officials which is set to be aired at a later date, as per the Daily Mail.

Sadly, you don’t get queues of people lining up to become referees, but the top-flight believes this could steer the younger generation in a new direction if they want to work within the game.

Unlike previous chest-mounted RefCam designs, Gillett will don a head-mounted device that is connected to the referee’s usual communications system.

We are all hoping for a night without officiating controversies as long as United come away from Selhurst Park with three points.

The season may be over – in terms of United in the league – but we could do with ending the campaign with a small run of wins. Just to boost the mood ahead of another trip to Wembley.
