Fabrizio Romano provides Mason Greenwood update ahead of summer window

Mason Greenwood has enjoyed a successful loan spell at La Liga outfit Getafe this season but that agreement will come to an end shortly, with the forward set to return to Manchester United upon the expiry of the loan next month.

The club made the decision to exclude Greenwood from any first-team plans last year and United’s stance on his future is unlikely to change between now and the start of next season.

Greenwood has scored six goals in 26 appearances in La Liga this season but has grown into one of Getafe’s most crucial players.

Writing earlier on Monday, journalist and transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano provided an update on Greenwood’s future, claiming the plan remains to sell the 22-year-old.

“I’m still told that the idea is for Greenwood to be sold, for the club to cash in on him,” Romano wrote for The Daily Briefing.

“Despite reports, I don’t have anything on Lazio and Greenwood so far. Many clubs are monitoring him but all waiting to understand Man United’s final position. Lazio asked for Greenwood on Deadline Day last summer but it was always Getafe leading the race from what I heard.”

As Romano points out, Lazio were in the frame to sign Greenwood at the end of last year’s summer window but it does not sound like that is a realistic prospect as things stand.

Getafe will be keen to sign Greenwood on a permanent basis but the Spanish club must come to an agreement with United.

It is unclear how United will approach any sale of Greenwood, with fees and demands possibly affected by off-pitch drama.

Regardless, United will most likely look to bolster the right-hand side of the attack this summer, with Antony and Jadon Sancho both having uncertain futures at Old Trafford.

Antony has endured a nightmare second season at the club and Sancho is currently out on loan at Borussia Dortmund following a public dispute with manager Erik ten Hag.
