‘What is going on?’: Even McCoist was taken aback at one United man’s spiritless showing, these should be his final games

It’s been a stark concern among Manchester United fans this season that Casemiro’s age has finally caught up to him.

Not only has the Brazilian suffered an injury-stricken campaign, which has seen him miss 18 matches in all competitions, but he also couldn’t look more off the pace when he is fit enough to actually start.

The common phrase ‘his legs have gone’ is perhaps the most fitting sentiment here. Casemiro is one of the most decorated players in Europe and will undoubtedly retire as a footballing great. However, that doesn’t mean he should still be anchoring United’s midfield week in, week out against such dynamic opposition.

This came into play again last night. As the Reds were trailing 2-0 after two early goals, they were under the cosh for a significant portion of the first half while Chelsea’s attackers piled forward in hopes of adding to United’s misery.

At one stage, Nicholas Jackson was able to brush past Casemiro with ease and continue towards Andre Onana’s goal almost entirely unchallenged. The 32-year-old could then be spotted making little effort to track back and would’ve ultimately been counting his lucky stars that nothing was made of the chance.

One pundit couldn’t believe his eyes

Commentating on the blockbuster clash on TNT Sports, Ally McCoist exclaimed: “He [Jackson] goes past him… what is Casemiro doing there? What is going on?”

It’s worth bearing in mind that the veteran currently ranks as the club’s highest earner on an absurd £350,000 per week.
