‘You never know’: United-linked defender with 22 G/A this season addresses speculation of exit

Manchester United have often found themselves linked with Bayer Leverkusen sensation Jeremie Frimpong, even more so since Erik ten Hag took the reins in 2022.

The Dutch international is enjoying yet another scintillating campaign in Germany, where he’s played an integral role at the heart of Xabi Alonso’s expectations-defying side.

Leverkusen are closing in on their first-ever Bundesliga title as they sit 13 points clear atop the table with just seven matches remaining. Remarkably, they are yet to lose a game, having won 23 and drawn four.

There are a further two prospects of silverware up for grabs in the form of the DFB Pokal, in which they face Dusseldorf in a semi-final tomorrow, and the Europa League, after they were drawn to West Ham United in the quarter-finals.

Frimpong, 23, has been irreplaceable throughout. Despite operating primarily as a right-back, he’s recorded an extraordinary 11 goals and 11 assists in all competitions thus far.

Speculation has suggested for a while now that Aaron Wan-Bissaka doesn’t fit in Ten Hag’s plans as much as he’d like to, largely due to his lack of threat or creativity on the attack.

Diogo Dalot has improved ten-fold this term and his availability has been second to none, although it remains to be seen if he’s at the calibre to form one part of a title-winning/challenging squad.

Frimpong addresses exit speculation

Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg weighed in on Frimpong’s future, claiming that a decision is expected to be made by the end of the month. United are among a host of clubs tracking the young talent, who couldn’t rule out a Leverkusen exit…

“I just want to win trophies,” he told Plettenberg. “I am really so focused on this season and on Leverkusen. But in the future? You never know what will happen in football.”
