‘It’s an honour’: Premier League manager reacts to Manchester United links

Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Gary O’Neil has reacted to the rumours of him taking on a coaching role at Manchester United.

The Red Devils are preparing for their first-ever summer under Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s part-ownership after his minority stake was finally ratified by the Premier League in February.

It’s been widely speculated that the Englishman has already begun putting the wheels in motion for how he plans to knock the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City off their perch while restoring the 20-time champions to their former glories.

As such, a significant revamp will be required across the squad, staff, hierarchy and stadium. Reports suggest that Erik ten Hag’s position in the dugout is safe for now and heading into the 2024/2025 campaign, but he may be bolstered with experienced figures to strengthen his coaching unit.

This led to O’Neil being linked with United, which came as a surprise to supporters of both sides – and him, it seems.

He reacted to the speculation on Friday afternoon, telling reporters (via BBC): “I don’t know where it came from

“Growing up, Liverpool and Manchester United always felt special. It’s an honour to be linked even if there’s no truth in it.”

He added: “I love it here. I’m a head coach, I’m always going to be a head coach. I’m really enjoying my time at Wolves. I was only made aware of it [the links] by the media team to prepare for your questions.”

O’Neil, formerly of Bournemouth, has Wolves sitting ninth-placed in the table, having succeeded Julen Lopetegui at the beginning of the season.
