Sweden manager names his captain after conversation with Victor Lindelof

Victor Lindelof has captained the Swedish national team since 2021 under Janne Andersson but following the appointment of Jon Dahl Tomasson, there has been uncertainty over the defender’s status as international skipper.

Lindelof has been a core member of the squad for the best part of the last decade, having been promoted to the senior side shortly after starring in Sweden’s U21 Euro 2015 win.

Speaking after he was named as Janne Andersson’s successor as manager of the international side, Tomasson revealed that he had already picked his captain but that he was going to announce it to the player before the press, referencing a conversation with Lindelof.

Now, ahead of Sweden’s games against Portugal and Albania, it has been announced that Lindelof will continue as captain under Tomasson.

“It’s a role he’s used to,” Tomasson told Sportbladet. “He’s a player who takes responsibility, plays in a big club and always thinks about the team.

When quizzed on whether it was easy decision to keep Lindelof as captain, Tomasson was quick and precise with his answer: “Yes, it was a very easy decision.”

Lindelof’s status with his international side is unquestionably very high but is that the case at Old Trafford going into a summer of uncertainty?

Erik ten Hag has a number of personnel headaches to sort out this summer and the biggest one is revamping the club’s centre-back department.

Jonny Evans and Raphael Varane are both out of contract at the end of the campaign and Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire have just one year remaining on their contracts.
