Contrary to popular belief, Barcelona not pushing for Mason Greenwood

Manchester United have yet to make a definite decision on Mason Greenwood’s future, but it seems unlikely that the 22-year-old will be brought back to the club.

Greenwood, a product of United’s renowned academy, is performing well in La Liga after close to a two-year lay-off from professional football. The forward was arrested after facing charges of attempted rape coercive control and assault.

Even though charges were dropped, United completed their internal investigation and decided it would be best for Greenwood to continue his career elsewhere. Greenwood was sent on loan to Getafe at the end of the transfer window and his contract expires in 2025.

While Getafe regularly making it clear they want Greenwood to remain at the Estadio Coliseum beyond this season, though unlikely to meet the required demands to sign the forward permanently, it has been long understood that La Liga giants Barcelona were keen.

Greenwood has scored eight goals and assisted a further five in all competitions in Spain this season.

However, a fresh report from Fabrizio Romano claims Barcelona are not interested in signing Greenwood from United in the summer and have other targets in mind to reinforce their attacking department.

Speculation over Greenwood’s future intensified on Monday when Barcelona director Deco held a meeting with his United counterpart John Murtough, along with the Reds’ director of negotiations, Matt Hargreaves. This led to newspapers suggesting the topic of ‘Mason Greenwood’ was high on the agenda.

Romano states Barca are not pursuing a move for Greenwood at this point. He adds that United remain open to offloading him permanently in the summer.
