Andre Onana endured a difficult start to life at Manchester United but the Cameroon international has turned things around as of late, becoming an increasingly important cog in Erik ten Hag’s side.

Onana replaced David de Gea between the posts last summer and the former Ajax and Inter Milan star came in with huge expectations.

When his performances failed to match those expectations, the criticism was endless and at one point, there were even calls for Ten Hag to drop the goalkeeper for Altay Bayindir, who was brought in late last summer.

Now, Onana is growing into his gloves and is second only to Arsenal’s David Raya in number of clean sheets in the Premier League. United are heavily reliant on Onana, with his side conceding more shots than 18 other clubs in the division.

Speaking after United’s 2-0 win over Everton this weekend, Onana asked supporters to put their trust in him and outlined United’s target this season.

“Now I’m better and I’m very happy,” the goalkeeper is quoted as saying by Fabrizio Romano.

“You will see much more from me, trust me. Hopefully in the coming years, we’ll fight for big things. And hopefully we get top four this season because it’s very important”.

It was always going to take Onana some time to adjust to life at the club, especially when the majority of the players he’s playing with are used to De Gea.

The understanding between Onana and his defenders is improving with each passing week and hopefully, that is a trajectory they are able to maintain.
