Fabrizio Romano provides Kobbie Mainoo future update after breakthrough season

Kobbie Mainoo is one of the silver linings of what has been a miserable season for Manchester United, with the teenage midfielder becoming a first-team regular under Erik ten Hag.

Mainoo was involved in last summer’s pre-season campaign but an injury cut his involvement short and halted his introduction to the first team.

His first-team debut didn’t come until late in October last year but since then, he has taken the Premier League by storm and now, he’s a ready-made first-team player and is even in the running to be named in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for this month’s international fixtures.

Mainoo is one of the first names on the team sheet under Ten Hag and now, journalist and transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the midfielder’s future.

As per the reporter, the Old Trafford club have opened talks with Mainoo’s entourage over a new and improved contract, with conversations behind held since last month.

Romano explains that Mainoo’s salary is a topic in the discussions but there is no rush to get it done, with the player happy with where he is at.

It’s also stated that the club sees Mainoo as one of the ‘faces’ of the new project, presumably the vision of INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Mainoo is currently under contract until 2027 but he is likely to be rewarded for his strides with a greatly improved deal that will reflect his status in the team.

Regardless of what happens with the manager and the first-team setup this summer, it’s almost certain that Mainoo will be central to any plans.
