‘I can’t see the goal threat’: Merson shares United vs Everton verdict and admits Ten Hag’s job hangs in the balance

Paul Merson has shared his prediction for Manchester United’s home clash with Everton in this Saturday’s early kick-off.

Both sides enter the clash in lacklustre form, with the Red Devils on the back of two straight Premier League losses at the hands of Fulham and Manchester City which – as has been the case numerous times this season – has led to widespread speculation over Erik ten Hag’s future in the dugout.

As for the Toffees, they were granted some respite in their largely problematic term when their 10-point deduction was reduced to six last week. The four returned points gave them some breathing space in the relegation battle, although they are just five points away from the dreaded drop and results certainly haven’t been swaying in their favour.

Scoring goals has proven hard to come by for the teams too; United have netted the lowest amount of any side in the top 12 of the table (37), while the Merseyside outfit has only outscored 19th-placed Burnley (25) and rock-bottom Sheffield United (22) with 29 to their name.

Merson has his say

Writing in his Sportskeeda column, Merson voiced his expectations for the Old Trafford contest.

“This is a good time to play Manchester United if you’re Everton,” the former Gunner began. “But the Toffees just can’t seem to win a game at the moment! They’ve gone 10 games without a win in the Premier League and they have scored more than one goal only once in those games!

“I’m just going to fancy Manchester United here as I can’t see the goal threat from Everton. The Red Devils keeping a clean sheet and getting a comfortable win is a bit unusual this season, but I can see them getting the job done at Old Trafford.

“Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS can easily pull the plug on Erik ten Hag, but the hard part is to hire a manager who they really want. Ten Hag’s job looks like it’s not completely safe and a lot will depend on how the current campaign draws to a close.”

His prediction: United 2-0 Everton.
