Kobbie Mainoo has enjoyed a breakthrough season and Manchester United are ready to offer the 18-year-old a bumper contract.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United have opened talks to extend Mainoo’s deal as they recognise the youngster’s growing importance to the first team.

Initial discussions have already taken place over a new contract.

Stockport-born Mainoo is set to receive a wage increase if he puts pen to paper, but it is understood that all parties are relaxed about the situation and there is no rush to accelerate talks.

The focus – as it should be – is on performing well for the remainder of the season.

Steven Railston reports: “It’s understood the performance-related bonuses in Mainoo’s current contract have been triggered, which is why there is no panic from the player’s camp to urgently push for a new deal.”

Mainoo is now one of the first names on Erik ten Hag’s team sheet. It comes as no surprise that United feel he warrants a new deal, but that doesn’t mean he needs to earn an insane amount.

Our stars should be on incentivised contracts. That would benefit young stars like Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho.
