‘That is criminal’ – Paul Scholes slams Man United star for his mistake against Man City

Casemiro’s “criminal” defense during Manchester United’s derby loss to Manchester City has drawn criticism from Paul Scholes.

Eight minutes into Sunday’s match at the Etihad Stadium, Marcus Rashford gave United a startling lead with a spectacular effort from 30 yards away.

With a screamer of their own, Phil Foden tied the score to give the hosts a response. With ten minutes remaining in the game, Foden doubled his total. Him and Julian Alvarez executed a fantastic one-two before Foden and Erling Haaland finished in injury time to seal the 3-1 victory.

For the majority of the match, Casemiro, who scored the game-winning goal in United’s FA Cup victory against Nottingham Forest last week, played well.

However, he made the mistake when City scored their second goal, that pushed City to win the derby. Casemiro was unable to react quickly and failed to follow Foden.

Scholes criticised Casemiro for that mistake and said that he expects better from a player of the Brazilian’s experience.

‘Look at Casemiro during that one-two,’ Scholes told Premier League Productions, as quoted by The Sun.

‘In a defensive position, the holding midfield role, that is criminal. The gap shouldn’t be that far and Casemiro, with the experience he has got, should not be getting done with a one-two there.’

Even though there was still a 2-1 deficit at the end of ninety minutes, Scholes acknowledged that City had a greater chance of extending their lead at that time than United had of tying the score.

‘Once United went behind they didn’t really have the answers, they don’t have the quality of Manchester City, they can’t keep a spell of possession for three or four minutes,’ Scholes said.

‘They don’t have that quality and they were a bit recognisable at the end.’

The derby defeat has brought criticism for the players, the managers and everyone around the club.

A match that showed promise in the early stages turned out to be disappointing in the end. Much like how most of United’s big matches have ended in Erik ten Hag’s tenure at the club.
