Gary Neville reckons Andre Onana was looking to pull a fast one on referee Andrew Madley during Sunday’s Manchester derby.
The Manchester United goalkeeper was influential in the build-up to Marcus Rashford’s scintillating eighth-minute opener; he took a few moments to restart play after signalling the Reds to push up-field, following which he played an inch-perfect pass to Bruno Fernandes, who then teed up the No.10.
Rashford’s fellow England international Phil Foden came up huge in the second half for his boyhood club though, equalising with an impressive finish of his own in the 56th minute.
It was then that Onana took it upon himself to give his side some respite. He went down with what appeared to be a slight hamstring/cramp concern in the 65th minute, forcing Madley to halt play while the Reds scurried over to the technical area to have a chat with the coaching staff as he received treatment.
Neville reacted on Sky Sports commentary: “Onana has now gone down with cramp. Have we seen that before? Can a goalkeeper get cramp? I think the referee might be being played. The goalkeeper can’t go off like an outfield player.”
The Cameroonian’s best efforts to help turn the tide were ultimately rendered in vain when Foden added to his tally to make it 2-1 in the 80th minute, and Erling Haaland went on to put the game to bed in injury time.
