Manchester United set date for Mason Greenwood decision

Mason Greenwood faces an uncertain future when his loan deal at Getafe expires at the end of the season.

It is no secret that Getafe would like to keep the forward on a permanent basis, but Greenwood is also believed to be attracting interest from La Liga giants Barcelona.

Manchester United’s new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has tasked his Ineos Sports group to make a fresh decision between now and the end of the season.

A report from The Athletic on Wednesday suggested Greenwood would be reluctant to return to United, with his dad/agent Andrew still holding meetings with the club.

There would be a lot of backlash if United decided to bring Greenwood back, but The Sun believes a decision will be made by the end of May.

It is understood that Ratcliffe wants to speak to the fans’ groups and other senior club officals about Greenwood before committing to a final decision.

Meanwhile, The Sun believes Erik ten Hag has made it clear he would welcome the return of the player but only if ‘it works for all parties’.

A source told the newspaper: “Jim Ratcliffe wants it resolved by the end of May so they can go into the summer knowing what’s happening.

“There’s interest in Mason from Barcelona but no move and no talks will happen until the end of May. Right now, the view is that there is a 50/50 chance Mason could return.

“If it was a purely football decision he’d already be back. But it’s not.

“And Ratcliffe is acutely aware of the need to get this righr and for all parties to be happy with whatever is decided.”

Greenwood has not played for United since he was suspended after being arrested on suspicion of rape and sexual assault in January 2022. All charges were subsequently dropped but the Reds previously suggested that the forward had no future at Old Trafford.

It’s crazy to think they could change their mind just one year after Greenwood’s switch to Spain.
