Raphael Varane made wait for Manchester United contract decision

Manchester United are still contemplating the futures of several senior players.

According to Samuel Luckhurst from the Manchester Evening News, United want to delay decisions over new deals to allow the Ineos Group to complete its 25% buy in.

Ineos have plans to change the club’s structure with a new sporting director. That is essentially the reason why United must hold fire on new contracts for players until that is solved.

The report in question focuses on French defender Raphael Varane.

United decided against triggering the one-year extension in his deal, but the 30-year-old has started in nine of the past 11 matches.

It is understood that Varane has no intention of leaving United during the January transfer window. He will want to see out his four-year contract.

Erik ten Hag should be aiming to lower the squad’s average age in the summer. That could involve replacing Varane with a younger centre-back.

The World Cup winner has been at Old Trafford since his 2021 transfer from Real Madrid.

United also need to decide on what to do with Jonny Evans. The 36-year-old signed for the Reds as a free agent before the start of this season.

Let us know what decision you would make over Varane’s contract in the comment section.
