Paul Merson is yet another name to add to the list of Kobbie Mainoo admirers. It’s getting pretty long.

As Manchester United gear up for a crucial Premier League clash away to Aston Villa, supporters are still reliving their teenage starlet’s heroics that secured all three points at the Molineux on February 1.

It marked Mainoo’s first-ever senior goal in scintillating fashion as he shimmied past the Wolverhampton Wanderers defence, nutmegging his man in the process, before curling a superb strike past Jose Sa in the seventh minute of injury time.

His winner sent the travelling Reds into hysterics, the home fans with their jaws dropping to the floor and the Wolves players onto their knees in despair. What a way to introduce yourself to the top flight.

Merson’s high praise for Carrington graduate

Merson was another who was left in awe of what he witnessed and writing in his Sportskeeda column, he claimed that Mainoo would still be receiving a lot more praise if he was one of two big-name players.

“Kobbie Mainoo’s emergence has been a bright spark for Manchester United. The lad was a bit nervous when he first came into the team, but he has really imposed himself in recent weeks and looks like a top-class talent,” the former Arsenal star began.

“The goal he scored the other day against Wolves was absolutely amazing – if Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo had scored such a goal, you wouldn’t hear the end of it.”
