John McGinn couldn’t help but give credit where it was due to his fellow Scotland international, Scott McTominay, after Sunday night’s clash at Villa Park.
Manchester United claimed a pivotal win in their quest to close the gap on the top-four as they overturned fifth-placed Aston Villa away from home, with McTominay yet again coming in clutch with a crucial match-winner in the 86th minute.
Rasmus Hojlund had opened the scoring early on – his fifth goal in as many games – before Douglas Luiz found an equaliser in the 67th minute. Erik ten Hag called upon his trusty Scot to try and do what he’s been so excellent at this season – finding a goal when United desperately needed one.
His superb header on the end of Diogo Dalot’s inch-perfect cross marked his eighth goal in all competitions, seven of which have come in the Premier League, which is the most of any player in the squad.
McGinn’s praise for international teammate
Reacting to a deflating result for the Villans post-match, skipper McGinn told Sky Sports: “One moment of sheer quality… maybe we could defend it better, putting our bodies on the line, get it away. But it’s a tremendous cross and I know unfortunately big Scotty’s great at coming in like that. At that stage, he timed his run well and it’s a great header. A bit of a sucker punch for us.”
