Newcastle United lead the race to sign Manchester United’s midfield target

According to reports, Newcastle United are leading the race to sign Manchester United transfer target Amadou Onana.

The Everton midfielder was linked with a move away from Goodison Park during the January transfer window with United, Arsenal and Newcastle all linked with the Belgian midfielder.

According to Football Insider, the Magpies are ‘at the front of the queue’ to sign the the £60m-rated midfielder.

The 22-year-old has been a huge success since coming to the Toffees in the summer of 2022 from Lille in a £30 million move.

Onana, who helped Everton stay in the Premier League the previous season, is putting on a run of impressive performances again as Dyche’s team tries to recover from the ten-point penalty they received for breaking profit and sustainability rules.

There are rumors that the Magpies administration is eager to bolster Eddie Howe’s midfield ranks as he looks to move on from what has been a difficult season.

Given the continuous rumours about Bruno Guimaraes’ future at St. James Park and the situation Joelinton is in during contract negotiations, Onana is being considered as the player to join the club and go straight into their midfield in the starting line up.

This summer, Everton will want a fee of about £50–60 million in exchange for Onana. Right now, Eddie Howe’s team is first in line for any possible transfer, which means either United would have to offer more money or look for other targets.

Erik ten Hag and the new United part owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe are both interested in adding new players to the squad and a midfielder is most likely to join the club in the summer.

A number of players have been linked with moves to Old Trafford including Onana, Barcelona’s Frenkie De Jong and OGC Nice’s Khephren Thuram.
