In order to reach his full potential and get the most out of his career, Marcus Rashford has been advised to cut back on his partying habits.
After going on a drunken binge in Belfast last month, the Manchester United and England player found himself in hot water. Rashford, who had been pictured in a nightclub the night before, called in sick for United’s training ahead of an FA Cup match against Newport.
He was fined two weeks’ pay and made to apologise to boss Erik ten Hag. This was not the first time ten Hag had to face Rashford’s disciplinary issues this season.
His future at United is now uncertain because Paris Saint-Germain are prepared to give him a way out of Old Trafford this summer. Rashford’s poor form, which has seen the attacker score only five goals this season, has made things worse.
Rashford should concentrate more on honing his skills than going out and partying, according to Manchester United icon Gary Neville. The former full-back has also instructed Rashford to closely examine his advisors.
Neville said while speaking on Stick to Football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet:
“We were talking about Marcus Rashford last week, about having that right group of people around him. You can’t do the things that your friends are doing, so if you’re influenced by your friends, there is that element of, ‘Oh go on then’ – and that ‘Go on then’ would have done me.
“I never went out in the first five or six years of my career at (Manchester) United. I don’t think I could have done. To me, it was work ethic and love for the club.
“I listened, trained, and wanted to do well. These are the things that at are the biggest factor [in becoming a professional footballer player].”
Rashford is one of the most experienced players in the United squad right now. He should be setting examples for younger players like Rasmus Hojlund, Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho. He should be someone they look up to and follow.
Rashford has a big choice to make about his football career. His focus, his consistency and at times his attitude is something that causes issue for the manager almost every season.
The England international has shown last season how good he can be, when he managed to score 30 goals. That is the Rashford we all want to see.
