Manchester United consider summer move for Atalanta defender valued at €60m

The list of defenders being linked with a summer move to Manchester United grows by the week.

According to Italian publication Calciomercato, as cited by the Manchester Evening News, INEOS have identified Atalanta centre-back Giorgio Scalvini as a target ahead of the summer transfer window.

United are not expected to make any signings prior to this evening’s deadline for the January transfer window, but signing a new centre-back will be high on the agenda at the end of the season.

Scalvini has been heavily linked with a switch to Old Trafford in recent weeks. He is reportedly valued at €60 million (£51.2m). It remains to be seen if United are willing to pay that for the 20-year-old, who has been capped seven times by Italy.

The Reds have suffered a number of injuries in their defence this season, with our best defender –Lisandro Martinez – missing the first half of the campaign.

There is also uncertainty over the future of several defenders at United. Jonny Evans is likely to be moved on, along with Raphael Varane, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we sold either Harry Maguire or Victor Lindelof.
