Manchester United man considering retiring from international duty after recent upset

Andre Onana is reportedly mulling over his international future after a recent upset with Cameroon, as per Daily Mail’s United Confidential column.

The goalkeeper first retired from his national team following a fallout with their Football Federation president Samuel Eto’o and head coach Rigobert Song at the 2022 World Cup, however, he opted to return and make peace with the senior figures in September 2023 for their Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Called up to partake in this year’s tournament, Onana delayed his arrival at the camp to play in Manchester United’s matches against Wigan Athletic and Tottenham Hotspur, which saw him unable to feature in Cameroon’s opening group-stage fixture.

He was then named in the subsequent clash against reigning champions Senegal and conceded three goals in a 3-1 defeat that left his nation’s hopes of qualification hanging in the balance.

Song was evidently displeased with United no.1’s showing, as he dropped him from the starting 11 for the Indomitable Lions’ final two outings of the competition, the latter of which saw them exit AFCON after a last-16 defeat to Nigeria.

Onana is now expected to take his place between the sticks for Thursday’s trip to the Molineux, but has been left irate at the circumstances of his international affairs and is considering cutting ties for a second time.
