David de Gea is in talks over his return to competitive football after spending seven months without a club and as a free agent.
The goalkeeper played his final game for Manchester United on June 3 and it unfortunately left a sour taste for all involved, as the Reds sustained a 2-1 defeat at the hands of rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
After several months of speculation, De Gea announced in July 2023 that his time at Old Trafford had come to an end after 12 years. He left having made the most appearances as a ‘keeper, the seventh-most appearances of any player in the club’s history (545), and featured in United’s most recent Premier League title-winning campaign all the way back in 2012/2013.
Reports suggested that the Spaniard had been somewhat messed around by the board; they had tabled a contract offer that proposed a significant pay cut on his eye-watering £375,000-a-week wages, which he signed before they opted against penning the deal themselves.
De Gea eyeing Saudi switch
Now, after taking a lengthy break away from the limelight, De Gea is ready to take between the sticks again while drawing the curtains on his European career. Daily Mail claims that the 33-year-old is negotiating a potential move to Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Shabab, who are also finalising the arrival of Ivan Rakitic from Sevilla – as well as targeting Chelsea’s (on loan to Galatasaray) Hakim Ziyech.
