Mason Greenwood subjected to more ‘die’ chants as Osasuna fans slam La Liga president Javier Tebas

Mason Greenwood was on the receiving end of verbal abuse from Osasuna fans over the weekend.

The 22-year-old left Manchester United on loan in the summer to join La Liga outfit Granada, where he recently won the Player of the Month award.

United decided to send Greenwood on loan following an internal investigation into a case that saw the United academy graduate arrested on suspicion of attempted rape, assault and coercive control in January 2022.

Those charges were dropped but United decided it was best for Greenwood to move.

Getafe signed Greenwood on loan on deadline day. The forward has scored five goals and registered four assists thus far and it is understood that the Spanish club want to keep him beyond this season.

During his debut against Osasuna back in September, Greenwood was targeted by the away supporters with chants of ‘Die Greenwood’, which led to Osasuna being fined. He got similar abuse at the weekend when Getafe travelled to El Sadar Stadium.

According to Cadena Copa, Osasuna’s ultra group had urged all fans to condemn Greenwood’s presence on the pitch and also the decision of La Liga president to allow the player join the league.

The statement read: “La Liga allows a detainee accused of attempted rape, assault resulting in actual bodily harm and controlling and coercive behaviour to compete in its competition. Once again, economic interests take precedence over the fight for a society without any type of oppression. A rapist will play on Sunday in our house.”

Nobody knows what the future holds for Greenwood. The best United can hope for is that he can add to his tally between now and the end of the season. A high volume of goals and assists could see his valuation rise.

Greenwood has also been linked with moves to Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid.
