Newcastle confident they will keep highly rated director amid interest from Manchester United

Manchester United are reportedly interested in appointing Newcastle’s Dan Ashworth as their new Sporting Director, but Toon chief Darren Eales is at least hopeful his highly rated counterpart will remain at St. James’ Park.

Manager Eddie Howe is also said to be under pressure after recent results after a brilliant season last term. They dipped into the Champions League but crashed out – much like ourselves – in the group stages.

Former Football Association and Brighton football director Ashworth has been a target for United ever since Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s partial takeover was completed. Now, Ineos are just waiting on ratification from the Premier League before they can start work at Old Trafford.

Ratcliffe apparently wants Ashworth to oversee United’s rebuild, alongside cycling guru Sir Dave Brailsford, who has had a brief stint in football at OGC Nice in Ligue 1.

However, Newcastle chief executive Darren Eales said today (as per The Mirror): “Dan spoke on the record recently about being happy in the project.

“We go back to our days at West Bromwich Albion where we worked together. Dan’s done a great job, there’s a lot more work to be done and we’re hopeful he’s here for the long term. He’s certainly enjoying his time at the moment.”‌

There has been so much talk about Ashworth coming to United, I would be surprised if there wasn’t some meeting taking place with Ineos. There’s never smoke without fire.
