Erik ten Hag confirms contract extensions for three players and ongoing talks over two Reds’ situations

Erik ten Hag provided an update on the contract situation regarding several players at Manchester United.

Firstly, supporters were made aware of Victor Lindelof’s one-year extension being triggered by the club this week. The board have since decided to take the same route with Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Hannibal Mejbri, keeping the trio’s future at Old Trafford safe until at least next summer.

It was announced recently that United would not activate the same clause in Raphael Varane’s contract, with his deal set to expire in June this year. Reports suggest that his £340,000-a-week wages have deterred the club from extending said terms, so negotiations could progress if the Frenchman is willing to decrease his salary.

Talks are underway as it stands though, according to Ten Hag; he revealed today that discussions are being held over Varane and Anthony Martial’s situations. The pair have often struggled to maintain fitness throughout the course of a season, so you could understand why there may be reluctance.

Ten Hag addresses contract situation

“We are talking with Rapha Varane and with Anthony Martial,” the manager told the press on Thursday afternoon, as cited by ManUtd.com. “And we have triggered the options on Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof and Hannibal [Mejbri].”

“I think that [Martial and Varane’s contracts] is an internal discussion between the club and the player.”
