Manchester United cut short loan as left-back faces Tottenham return

Manchester United have cut ties with Sergio Reguilon.

According to The Athletic, Sergio Reguilon is returning to Tottenham after Manchester United decided to trigger a break clause to cut short his loan move.

The 27-year-old Spaniard joined United in September following an injury crisis in the left-back department.

Erik ten Hag has had to deal with injuries throughout the squad, but at the beginning of the season he knew he’d be without Luke Shaw and regular back-up Tyrell Malacia for a long spell.

Reguilon didn’t pull up trees at Old Trafford, but he did make 12 appearances across all competitions. It goes without saying that his performances were an improvement on Sofyan Amrabat being shoehorned into the left-back role.

United’s decision to trigger a break clause in Reguilon’s deal comes with Shaw having returned and Malacia also in the latter stages of his recovery. Shaw missed the last two matches, but he will be back in the line-up soon.

Furthermore it wouldn’t make sense to keep a third left-back with United now out of Europe and the Carabao Cup.
