Atletico Madrid join Barcelona in race to sign Mason Greenwood

Mason Greenwood has resurrected his career in Spain after an impressive first six months with Getafe, scoring four goals and assisting another five so far this season.

The forward-turned-winger joined Getafe late in last summer’s transfer window after Manchester United announced that he would no longer represent the club.

Greenwood’s exploits for Getafe have put other clubs on red alert as he is increasingly expected to join another club at the end of the campaign.

Barcelona have been linked with a move for Greenwood in recent days, with a report claiming the Catalan giants were planning on offering the former England international the number 10 shirt in a bid to lure him to the Spotify Camp Nou.

Now, it is being claimed Barcelona could face fierce competition for his signature, with Spanish publication Marca reporting that Atletico Madrid have entered the fold.

As per the report, Diego Simeone has been impressed by Greenwood’s quick adaptation to La Liga football and his side have reportedly crept ahead of Barcelona in the race due to the latter’s financial difficulties.

It is added that Atletico Madrid have already opened talks to sign Greenwood, with United holding out for a reported £40m.
