Scott McTominay captained Manchester United against Liverpool this afternoon for the first time in a Premier League game.

The midfielder was granted the armband in Bruno Fernandes’ absence after he was shown a fifth yellow card in the closing stages of the Bournemouth defeat last weekend.

A Carrington graduate and lifelong Red, it would’ve undoubtedly been a career highlight for McTominay to lead out his boyhood club at Anfield, and while he’d have much rather been leaving Merseyside with all three points, a draw and a clean sheet will have to suffice this time around.

Viewers and pundits were quick to point out a ballsy decision the Scot made prior to kick-off; after winning the coin toss, he opted for Liverpool to attack the Kop for the first 45 minutes rather than the second, leaving the home side to target a large segment of travelling United fans for the second half.

Gary Neville pinpointed the switch on Sky Sports commentary, saying: “He’s bugged the locals ready.”
