Manchester United starlet Kobbie Mainoo is enjoying a breakthrough season.
The results haven’t been great and nor was the fact Mainoo missed the start of the season after sustaining an injury during a promising pre-season.
I can’t help but wonder if we’ll see Mainoo partner Sofyan Amrabat at Anfield, especially after last season’s 7-0 defeat, and I certainly wouldn’t bet it against it.
Either way, it won’t be long before the young midfielder features again. He may even start against Bayern Munich in the Champions League tonight. That would be an incredible occasion for the 18-year-old but if they’re good enough, you’re old enough at this club.
There has even been reports that Gareth Southgate is already trying to ensure that Mainoo pledges to play for the Three Lions.
Mainoo’s old youth coach (prior to when he joined United) has done an interview with The Times about how he was a cut above the rest from such a young age.
Cheadle & Gately youth coach Steve Vare said: “Even at that young age, Kobbie stood out by a mile.
“What I had to do was load up the team that he was playing against with good players to make it an even game and stop him from scoring six goals a game.
“I would bring in rules especially for him, like he was only allowed to score with his left foot, just to make it a challenge. He was so quick, strong and skilful.
“Even though he deserved it, we told him we couldn’t give him the man of the match trophy every week because we had to spread it around the team.”
The sky is the limit for Mainoo if he continues working hard and listening to the coaches who are trying to get the best out of him.
