‘The big worry for me’: Scholes voices concerns over United frontman while branding two players ‘selfish’

Paul Scholes has highlighted Manchester United’s glaring issues in the frontline after they bowed out of the Champions League in humiliating fashion.

The Reds finished rock-bottom of Group A after claiming just four points from the six matches they played – their lowest-ever return in this stage of the competition, as well as the first time they’ve lost four matches.

They also etched their names in history by becoming the first-ever English team to concede 15 goals in the group stage, but amidst the defence leaking goals each matchday, fingers must also be pointed at the attackers for not being clinical enough.

Tonight was a prime example of that, with United failing to get out of second gear at any point across the 90 minutes. They managed just five shots, with only one testing Manuel Neuer and hitting the target, to Bayern Munich’s 10 (three on target).

Scholes voices his concerns

Scholes namedropped Rasmus Hojlund as one area of concern for Erik ten Hag; the £72 million summer signing was the club’s top ‘scorer in Europe but is yet to get off the mark in the Premier League and tonight, you’d have almost forgotten he was on the pitch.

Speaking to TNT Sports following the full-time whistle, the former midfielder said: “The big worry for me has got to be the centre-forward, we can’t create a chance for him. I know he’s scored five goals in the Champions League, he’s not scored a league goal, he hasn’t had a chance tonight, I don’t think he had a chance on Saturday [against Bournemouth]… it’s a big concern for where the goals are going to come from.

“You expect creativity from you wide players, Antony and [Alejandro] Garnacho, but they’re quite selfish players. They’re not players who are looking up – they’re thinking about scoring their own goals, thinking about scoring themselves.”
