Paul Scholes is, like every Manchester United supporter, feeling the dismay of yet another lacklustre start to the campaign.
The Red Devils’ odds for Champions League progression are stacked against them tonight; even if they were to overturn major favourites Bayern Munich, who boast a 39-game unbeaten streak in the group stage, Copenhagen and Galatasaray’s match must end in a draw for United to qualify.
Given that they sit rock-bottom of Group A after five matches, having claimed only four points, United only have themselves to blame.
Their hopes of defending the Carabao Cup were squandered in the last-16 after they fell to a 3-0 defeat versus Newcastle United, while in the Premier League, the Reds sit sixth-placed.
Of course, it must be mentioned that the side’s seemingly never-ending, debilitating injury crisis has been a mitigating factor to inflict such poor form – but you’d still expect one of the most expensive teams in world football to get the job done each week with the quality they have available.
Scholes weighs in
Speaking prior to tonight’s clash at Old Trafford, club legend Paul Scholes told TNT Sports: “I can’t remember one good result this season. The wins were against teams you’d expect to beat. It’s not those games that define Man United players, it’s big games.
“I think when Christian Eriksen and Casemiro return [from injury], that’ll make them a lot more relaxed. It’ll add a lot more experience and quality. I’m hoping when those two come back, things will improve for ten Hag, but in terms of challenging for big trophies, I don’t think this squad is good enough.”
