Ally McCoist suggests Manchester United could have Liverpool-esque wait for Premier League success

Ally McCoist says he would not be surprised if Manchester United went 30 years without a Premier League title, like Liverpool between 1990 and 2020.

It’s a wild statement and one I look forward to putting to McCoist when we win it before then… but let’s not joke around, United have a lot to fix before we can start talking about winning Premier League titles. Sir Jim Ratcliffe could be biting off more than he can chew.

No Red wants to see us suffer a long wait like Liverpool fans. They waited 30 years only for their title to come during the Covid season, when fans were unable to get into stadiums so they never really got to celebrate it properly.

“With United, what do you do now?” the Rangers and Scotland legend said, as per the Mail. “Do you get rid of Erik ten Hag? Ten Hag, Jose Mourinho – all these good managers with a good pedigree and it’s just not worked, so it’s more than that. It’s systematic all the way through the club.

“I know there’s going to be changes at the top, but Liverpool went 30 years without a title. I’m not saying that’s going to happen, but you would not be surprised if it did. It’s a bizarre situation. I could not believe the level of performance they put in at Newcastle. That was really concerning and then they were miles better for the Chelsea game, but you look at the weekend against Bournemouth and it’s impossible to put your finger on it.

“You look at United and Chelsea — two massive clubs who not so long ago, you’d be talking about challenging, but there’s a softness to them. The biggest criticism I could level at United and Chelsea is that even Luton have got a bit about them.”

Anyhow, there’s nothing United can really do other than do everything they need to prove critics like McCoist wrong. The hard work will be worth it in the end even it takes a while. Just not as long as McCoist suggests it will.

United take on Liverpool in the Premier League this weekend, which makes McCoist’s quotes all the more relevant.
