It’s do or die for Manchester United in the Champions League and we may even end Tuesday having failed to quality for the Europa League.
From speaking to a lot of Man Utd fans, I get a sense that many would be happy without a run in the Europa League. You look at the injuries we’ve suffered this season due to fixture congestion and I don’t think adding anymore is something we want to be doing if we can’t compete in the prestigious Champions League.
The Reds go into the final week of the Champions League group matches at the bottom of Group A with just four points from their five fixtures. We’ve lost three matches, only managing to beat FC Copenhagen while throwing away a healthy lead to lose against Galatasaray last time out.
United need to win and hope Copenhagen ends in a draw in order to reach the last 16 of the Champions League.
However, if there is a winner in that game, United would have to settle for the Europa League – granted we beat Bayern Munich, which we must remember is a huge ask given our form this season.
A draw could also confirm Europa League football if Copenhagen lose, but Bayern go into the game after already securing top place in Group A. Thomas Tuchel’s men won their opening four matches in the group before drawing with Copenhagen last time out.
Team News
United have a number of injuries going into this must win game. Erik ten Hag will be definitely without Tyrell Malacia, Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez for the visit of Bayern because the trio are not expected back until the New Year.
The manager may call upon Jonny Evans, who is returning from injury, but it remains to be seen if Christian Eriksen or Mason Mount will be passed fit to face the Germans.
When it comes to Bayern, Jamal Musiala is expected to be back to take on United. They will be without Matthijs de Ligt, Bouna Sarr and Tarek Buchmann.
Predicted line-ups
Manchester United: Onana; Wan-Bissaka, Maguire, Evans, Shaw; Mainoo, McTominay, Fernandes; Antony, Hojlund, Garnacho.
Bayern Munich: Neuer, Mazraoui, Min-Jae, Upamecano, Davies; Goretzka, Kimmich; Sane, Muller, Coman; Kane.
