Erik ten Hag is unsurprised that Scott McTominay has found himself among the goals this season.
The midfielder is in the most prolific form of his Manchester United career and, given the deeper role he so frequently plays, it’s come as quite a shock to the Old Trafford faithful.
McTominay’s match-winning brace against Chelsea on Wednesday took United up to sixth place in the Premier League and they finished the gameweek one point ahead of Newcastle United, level with Tottenham Hotspur and three points away from fourth-placed Manchester City. Not bad for a team in a ‘crisis’ with players who are turning against their manager…
Now the Reds’ top goalscorer with six to his name, McTominay has cemented his place in the starting 11 and will be looking to add to his impressive tally over the forthcoming season-defining fixtures.
Ten Hag on McTominay’s goalscoring
When quizzed on the Scot’s ability to be there in the right place at the right time, Ten Hag told the media (via ManUtd.com): “Actually, from the first moment, I saw he has a very good smell for making [it into] the box. And he is a very good finisher. So, that’s not a surprise. When we bring him in the way we want to play, in the position, when we get the balls there, yeah, he will finish.”
