Raphael Varane is absent from Manchester United’s matchday squad to face Chelsea, with Erik ten Hag deploying a much-rotated starting XI

The defender has been at the centre of wide speculation on his future this term after falling out of favour to the likes of Jonny Evans and now, Victor Lindelof.

While such rumours have been dismissed by the manager, numerous reports have suggested there is unrest in the dressing room following a record-breakingly poor start to the season.

Alas, tonight’s omittance of the Frenchman is reportedly due to him having a sore back, as confirmed by Samuel Luckhurst.

One injury absentee returns

Evans, meanwhile, has returned from his four-week spell on the sidelines to make the substitutes bench, so will be called upon if any issues arise with Harry Maguire or Lindelof.

Kick-off is at 8.15pm at Old Trafford and the Reds will be looking to bounce back from their dismal 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United.
