Maguire 6, Rashford 2: Manchester United player ratings after Newcastle defeat

Manchester United were on the receiving end of a 1-0 defeat against Newcastle after a lacklustre display at St James’ Park.

The Reds struggled to convert any of their chances – not that we had many clearcut – and Newcastle dominated throughout and deserved to take three points from the game.

Anthony Gordon scored the only goal as Aaron Wan-Bissaka left him in on his own at the back post.

Here are our player ratings.

Andre Onana – 5

A topic of conversation ahead of the match, Onana responded well to his mistakes in Istanbul. Denied Miguel Almiron when I thought the ball was hitting the back of the net, though I’ve seen his kicking better.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 3

Busy evening but at fault for Gordon’s goal.

Harry Maguire – 6

Brilliant in the first half when Newcastle started with bombard United with pressure. Made some crucial blocks.

Luke Shaw – 5

Did well at centre-back. We’ve missed him.

Diogo Dalot – 2

Had an absolute shocker defensively and offered nothing in attack.

Kobbie Mainoo – 5

Calm on the ball while many of his team-mates act like the ball is a hot potato.

Scott McTominay – 2

Happy to hide behind shadows and failed to track runners. Touched the ball 30 times throughout the game. Awful.

Marcus Rashford – 2

Showed no fight or desire and didn’t look keen on having to defend. Lucky to be starting games at the moment.

Bruno Fernandes – 4

Didn’t have much of an impact on the game, but some of Bruno’s through balls down the left to Garnacho were sublime.

Alejandro Garnacho – 4

United’s biggest threat, but not one of his better games.

Anthony Martial – 2

Rightly berated by his manager. Couldn’t be arsed to track his man. Eventually hooked off.

Subs

Rasmus Hojlund – 5

A presence up top, as per, but I fear he’s still not 100% after his recent hamstring injury.

Antony – 6

Unlucky to have a goal ruled out because Maguire got in the way before the ball crossed the line.

Sergio Reguilon – 5

Positive impact from the bench.

Sofyan Amrabat – 4

Replaced Mainoo and did well to protect the defence against Newcastle’s pressure. Sloppy passing.
