Erik ten Hag believes Marcus Rashford enjoys playing on the right flank and dismisses the ridiculous suggestions that the Englishman cannot feature in the same team as Alejandro Garnacho.

There may be stiff competition for places in the team, in certain areas, but it is a positive situation for a manager to have selection headaches.

Take Alejandro Garnacho as an example. The young Argentina international has started the last six matches in Rashford’s preferred role on the left – and he has scored in the last two games against Everton and Galatasaray.

However, Rashford missed three of the last six games due to rotation, injury and suspension.

Ten Hag started Garnacho and Rashford in the same team against FC Copenhagen, Luton Town and Everton. The manager decided to switch Rashford to the right flank to accommodate Garnacho on the left.

Rashford got on the scoresheet at Goodison Park to end a 12-game goal drought and Ten Hag has been quick to shoot down suggestions that he will omit the England star from the side at Newcastle on Saturday night.

“You didn’t see our games?” Ten Hag said when asked about selecting both Garnacho and Rashford, as per the Manchester Evening News. “Against Copenhagen they were both in the team, against Everton they were both in the team and now Rashy was suspended.

“You make this your conclusion [that they both prefer to play on the left]. Rashy can play from the right and he likes to play from the right, but he can also play through the middle and he can play from the left, so he is really multi-functional.”
