English press criticise Harry Maguire after getting away with foul in North Macedonia draw

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire played the full match for England against North Macedonia.

England made it through yet another qualifying campaign unbeaten, with Maguire as a frequent name in Gareth Southgate’s line-up for the Three Lions, but last night it ended in a draw.

It finished 1-1 after England gave away a penalty in the first half before turning things around after the break. Maguire was disappointed with the referee’s decision to award North Macedonia a penalty, but a goal from Jack Grealish equalised the scoring.

Erik ten Hag will be pleased to see his defender come through another game for England without getting injured. Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford managed 10 minutes from the bench before the end.

English press reaction

The former Leicester City centre-back made a mistake in the first half and was lucky not to give away a penalty.

A number of British newspapers held it against Maguire when giving their player ratings last night.

The Sun felt Maguire’s performance warranted a 5/10 rating.

“Maguire looked the shakiest member of the backline and almost cost England a goal with his error in the first half.”

Meanwhile, Maguire scored 5/10 from The Telegraph.

“Poor passes in the first half played his team into danger and then could easily have been penalised when he tried to rescue the situation. Importantly did not lead to a goal.”

The Evening Standard scored Maguire 6/10, writing: “Should have given away a penalty in the first half for an unwise lunge in on Elif Elmas, when he got nowhere near the ball.”
